sicpad can

Aim: to observe contraction in gases.
Equipment: aluminium can, scissor tongs, bunsen burner, heatproof mat, tripod, gauze mat, an open container of water.

hypothesis: the can will shrink.
  1. Set up your bunsen burner under the tripod and gauze mat.
  2. pour apox 50-60 ml of water into the can. it should be no more than 1/4 full.
  3. heat the can of water until steam is escaping from the top.
  4. carefully grip the can with the tongs. be sure to have a strong grip on it before lifting it off.
  5. Quickly but very carefully invert the can as you plunge it into the container of cold water.
Observations: the water in the can started to boil when heated, it started to steam then when it was placed in cold water it shrinks and squished together.

Explanation:
- the boiled because it was being heated by the bunsen, causing the particles to vibrate alot and move around.
- The can contracted because it was going from hot to cold, cooling them down too fast and they got small and stuck together.
