act 4 and 5

Act Four, Scene One
  1. What does the Duke believe Antonio intends to do? (Black Pg. 147, Blue Pg.85) 
  2. What does Shylock intend to do? kill Antonio but ends up saying he'll take that money
  3. Finish this quote that tells us why, ‘You’ll ask me why I rather choose to have a weight of carrion flesh, than to receive three thousand ducats. I’ll not answer that, but to say it is my humor, is it answered?’ (Black Pg. 149, Blue Pg.86) 
  4. What two loopholes does Portia find in the wording of the contract? (Black Pg. 165-167, Blue Pg.95-96) no blood and it cant be more or less than a pound shylock would be kill too
  5. Shylock now has to pay penalties. Complete this quotes that tell us what the penalties are: ‘I pardon thee thy life before thou ask it, For half thy wealth, it is Antonio, the other half comes to the general state’ (Black Pg. 169, Blue Pg.97) 
  6. Are the penalties fair? Why/why not.
  7. How do Lorenzo and Jessica gain by the result?
  8. What reward has Portia claimed and why is this significant?
Portia tells Shylock ‘The quality of mercy is not strained’. How does she try to persuade Shylock to show mercy, how much mercy is she willing to show him ((Black Pg. 157-159, Blue Pg.91-92) 


Act Four, Scene Two
  1. What invitation does Portia refuse and why?
  2. What does Nerissa plan to get, why do you think this is important?
  3. Do you admire Portia after these scenes, or do you find her actions cruel. Use examples to support your thinking. i find her actions cruel "Sir i would speak with you. ill see if i can get my husbands ring which i did make him swear to keep forever."

Shylock makes his last appearance in A4S1

  • How does he behave when he thinks he is winning?
  • Is his behaviour what you expected of him based on the story so far, look carefully at his one-ine answers, as well as at his longer speeches. Look too at his reply to Gratiano L 139-142.
  • Why do lines 40-46 offer a particularly chilling comparison. What is Shylock saying. Compare L67.
  • How does Shylock react when he becomes the victim? he cry's
Act Five, Scene One
  1. Why do Lorenzo and Jessica remind each of the stories of classical lovers?  (Black Pg. 183-185, p.182 gives specific examples, Blue Pg.107-108) 
  2. What are Portia's feelings as she approaches the house?  (Black Pg. 189, Blue Pg.105) 
  3. What is the first argument to break out? ‘’By yonder moon I swear you do me wrong, In faith I gave it to the judges clerk’ (Black Pg. 193, Blue Pg.107) 
  4. How do Gratiano and Bassanio try to justify parting with the rings, are they successful?  (Black Pg. 193-197, Blue Pg.108-110) .... no
  5. Was Bassanio right to give away the ring, give reasons for your thinking. no because Portia was the dressed up as the judge the same one that ask for bassanios ring
  6. Complete this quote to show the effect these arguments have on Antonio?  ‘I once did lend my body for his wealth, … I dare be bound again, my soul upon the forfeit that your lord will never more break faith advisedly’ (Black Pg. 199, Blue Pg 111)
  7. Portia and Nerissa have the rings. What does this prove to Antonio, Gratiano and  Bassanio? Hint- Who were they in the court? (Black Pg. 201, Blue Pg 111) the judges
